The Research Department of the Ocean Museum Germany (Deutsches Meeresmuseum) is looking for candidates to fill the position of

Scientist (m/f/d) data management and fishery data

to be based in Stralsund, Germany.

For many people, the ocean is a place of longing. For us, it is at the centre of our daily work. The Ocean Museum Germany is a nationally and internationally important natural science museum. In our exhibitions, aquariums, and collections, we focus on the diversity of marine life and ocean ecosystems. In our research projects, we investigate current topics of marine biology, coastal oceanography, and fisheries. We are actively involved in nature and species conservation. At our three museum sites, the MEERESMUSEUM, OZEANEUM, and NATUREUM, we inform about the marine environment, threats, and solutions. Our visitors are welcome to immerse in the fantastic underwater world of the tropical and northern seas – with full-size animal models, impressive exhibits, and fascinating aquaria.

Project and job description

We are searching for a data scientist (m/f/d) for the project ”Conservation Union for Management of the Baltic Harbour Porpoise Populations and Their Habitat (CUMBIAH)”.

CUMBIAH is a research project financed by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation of Germany and carried out by a consortium of 17 international project partners from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, and Germany. The CUMBIAH consortium generates and provides updated information on the conservation status of Baltic harbor porpoise populations and rates important conservation measures to prevent a further population decline.

Your tasks:

- acquisition of fishery-related data, focusing on fishing effort

- harmonization of acoustic monitoring and fishery data in the Baltic Sea region

- development of methods for data reporting and provision

- analysis and modeling of fishery and environmental data, including the risk of bycatch

- support of international project partners in data processing, analysis, and modeling

- data maintenance

- consolidation and scientific evaluation of data sets and methods

- creation of scientific map material

- preparation and presentation of scientific publications and presentations

- project-related media and public relations

- availability for national and international business travel

Job qualifications:

- university degree (M.Sc.) in computer science, biology, bioinformatics, geoinformatics, environmental science, mathematics, data science, or physics

- extensive experience in managing large amounts of data

- experience in processing and analyzing bioacoustics data

- extensive knowledge of data modeling and statistics

- experience in GIS and spatial analysis

- excellent English language skills (written and oral)

Desirable qualifications:

- German language skills

- drivers license class B
