In this three-year apprenticeship, we will make you fit in theory and practice!

Structural engineers create drawings and technical documentation for various structures. To do this, they typically work on a computer using CAD software. Based on design sketches or instructions from architects and engineers, they produce floor plans, construction and working drawings, elevations, and detailed drawings. In doing so, they adhere to the relevant technical regulations.

In addition to drawing work, they make specialist calculations. For example, they determine building material requirements, create parts lists and prepare measurements. They monitor the planning and construction processes of building projects and ensure that the necessary documents, calculations and invoices are available on time. Draughtsmen also manage the different versions of drawings for a project and back up the data.

The relevant knowledge and skills are imparted in the course of practical work at the municipal utilities of the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer as well as through vocational school instruction (Kleve District Vocational College in Kleve in the 1st and 2nd year of training, Düsseldorf City Vocational College in the 3rd year of training).

In addition, two six-week internships take place during the apprenticeship, one in a civil engineering company and one in a surveying office.

For example, the trainees learn at the training company:

how to use application software to convert data, define and create layers, make drawing presettings, create and manage computer-aided drawings, how construction processes are carried out, calculations according to building regulations and constructions of floor plans, sections and views are created

what to consider when designing different buildings and constructing them with different building materials

how to apply contractual and technical guidelines, regulations and information sheets as well as quality assurance instruments

how to create and design as-built, general and detailed plans, road layout plans, drainage plans or planting plans

In addition, throughout the entire apprenticeship, students learn about topics such as rights and responsibilities during the apprenticeship, the organization of the training company, and environmental protection.

At the vocational school, students acquire additional knowledge in job-specific subject areas (e.g., participating in construction planning, designing a section of road with all necessary parameters, including ancillary facilities, structural elements, etc.) as well as in general education subjects such as politics and social studies.
