Research for Peace and Security

The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg has been investigating the conditions for peace and security – on a global, regional and local scale – since 1971. The IFSH aims to contribute actively to peace by conducting outstanding and innovative research. Transferring knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the institutes work.

We currently employ around 70 colleagues in research, transfer, teaching and administration at our locations in Hamburg and Berlin. Thanks to funding from the City of Hamburg, we are expanding our science and service teams significantly as part of a growth strategy for the coming years. The IFSH is an international and diverse institution. We combine a culture of openness, agility and short communication channels with the reputation of an established and well-connected research institution.

The IFSH is seeking a committed Event Manager to join its Communications Department, which is responsible for the institutes strategic, science and media communications. This 70% part-time position entails 28 hours per week. It is graded at EG 11 under the TV-AVH collective agreement, is based in Hamburg and is to be filled as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to two years, with the possibility of an extension subject to the availability of funding.

In this role, you will organise events that bring researchers into conversation with specialist audiences, policymakers, civil society and the interested public. Events are an important communication tool and contribute to the IFSHs knowledge transfer. Initially, the role combines hands-on event organisation with independent project management. Over time, it will increasingly involve developing event formats and engaging with stakeholders. Overall strategic responsibility rests with the Head of Communications.

Your mission

Event Management and Project Coordination

Plan and deliver established event formats (e.g. academic conferences, summer schools, networking events and retreats)

Organise in-person, hybrid and online events

  • Manage participants and speakers for individual projects, including invitations, registrations and data management
  • Prepare budgets, monitor costs and handle administrative follow-up for events
  • Coordinate internal and external contributors, partners and service providers

Oversee and support events on site

Evaluate participant numbers, feedback and other appropriate criteria to help ensure quality

Event Format Development, Communication and Knowledge Transfer

  • Develop existing event formats further on the basis of feedback, evaluation and the IFSHs strategic goals
  • As you gain experience, design and deliver new, contemporary, dialogue-oriented formats for different audiences
  • Develop event communications in collaboration with the communications team to increase visibility and attendance
  • Advise researchers on the practical design of events as tools for science communication and knowledge transfer

Your profile

A completed university degree, preferably in event management, communications, marketing, cultural management or research management, or a comparable qualification with relevant professional experience

Experience in planning and delivering events

  • Strong organisational skills and an ability to keep track of multiple tasks at once
  • Strong communication skills and enjoyment of working with researchers, political and institutional partners, service providers and participants
  • Willingness to learn how to develop dialogue and knowledge-transfer formats and increasingly contribute your own ideas
  • An independent, reliable and solution-oriented approach to work, along with strong teamwork skills
  • Confident use of common digital tools, MS Office and social media

Excellent written and spoken German and English
