Job description

The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a global programme for the prevention of violence and the promotion of peace in crisis and conflict regions. In field, our experts provide long-term support to partner organisations in their commitment to dialogue, human rights and peace. The CPS programme in Guatemala “human rights, social cohesion and culture of dialogue” focuses on the capacity building with vulnerable groups in indigenous communities to improve their sociopolitical participation and transform conflicts through dialogue. To achieve this, the programme cooperates with partner organisations to strengthen (indigenous) women and youth in the regions of Baja Verapaz, Quiché and Escuintla.

Your tasks

The international CPS advisor will work in tandem with our national CPS advisor and provide technical support and capacity building to multiple partner organisations and their target groups. The key tasks will be:

Designing collaborative strategies with our partner organisations to improve women and youth capacities for sociopolitical participation. The strategies will be based on a needs and conflict assessment of the three project regions.

Design and Implementation of capacity building workshops for partner organisations, with a focus on dialogue and conflict transformation.

Support facilitation of dialogue round tables with women and youth, community representatives, ancestral authorities, as well as local authorities.

Providing advisory support to partner organisations and their target groups, for the articulation of their needs and interests in a conflict sensitive manner.

Project monitoring in accordance with CPS PME guidelines.

Systematization of experiences, provide material for knowledge management and change stories.

Your profile

Completed masters degree in peace and conflict studies, political or social sciences, with additional proven knowledge of human, indigenous and/or womens rights

Many years of in-field related work experience on dialogue and conflict transformation, especially with individuals and/or communities that have been or are confronted with violence and (other) forms of human rights violations

Ample experience with the design and implementation of capacity building strategies and methodology based on popular education with indigenous and/or rural communities, women and youth as well as with the facilitation of intergenerational, intersectional and multicultural dialogue spaces in conflictive contexts

Experience with developing and implementing “Training of Trainers” models and in supporting and accompanying civil society organizations in (post-) conflict contexts

Good knowledge of the post-conflict context in Latin America, preferably Guatemala and high resilience and self-reflection capacity, also in fragile contexts

High intercultural sensitivity and respect for traditions, religion, spirituality and cosmovision of the Guatemalan population, especially that of the Mayan people and their sociopolitical structures and representations
